id="more-33613">

Are we awake yet? Is winter over? Are we hearing the other voices of spring? Are we seeing the results of the longer days and shorter nights and is the rain softer and warmer at last? With the creaking of the frog we’re now looking around. By golly that is a robin on the lawn. And just look at the swelling buds on the peach tree! The heather is in bloom and on warm days the honey bees are smothering it with attention. The grass has lost most of its brown spots and the leaves on the rhodies are opened wide now, not tucked up close together to protect the blossom buds from the cold of winter.

When we moved here 12 years ago, the front screen door was missing. The hinges remained but someone previous had taken the screen door with them or removed a broken one and not gotten around to putting up a new one. So after a few years we bought a nice one, painted it deep green and put it in place. Complete with an old fashioned spring that snaps it shut with a bang. That’s another country noise, you know, the creaking of the spring on a screen door as it opens. Creeeeeaaakkkkk. It’s a sound of home for many of us. It’s a sound that says, “Come on in, pull a chair up to the kitchen table and here’s a cup of coffee. Would you care for a cookie to wash down with that?” That door creak is the sound of, “Welcome, friend.”

Around here the creak of the frogs is like the creak of a screen door. It is a welcome sound for it is the sound of winter leaving and a friend coming in to visit for a season. It is the sound of spring pulling up a chair and joining us for coffee and cookies. We’ve made it through the dark and lonely winter and while there may be a snow storm or two yet to get run through before spring gets really comfortable in it’s chair, spring is in the house and all is well. And yes, it will take a spot of milk and a half spoonful of sugar in the coffee, thanks.

So folks, put on the coffee, tune up the hearing, and start listening for the springs in your lives. There will be sounds out there that will tell you a new season has arrived. It might be a creaking frog like for us, or it might be a neighbor’s knock at the door. It might even be a step towards reconciliation in a relationship. The best sound of spring might be the words, “I’m sorry.” Or perhaps, “I forgive you unconditionally.” With those a great surge of growth can occur that will lead us all into the best summer ever and a grand harvest of joy in the fall.

Happy Hoeing,

Jon and Elaine the listening farmers, Snickers the ear wagging dog, Mystery the whispering cat, Ben and his flock of spring loaded chickens, and the Parson Dudley Brown and his flock of spring happy ducks, all of whom live joyfully at The Open Gate Farm.

Solarize Stanwood/Camano Selects Solar Installers

Announcements

Energy

Environment

Quickly

0228
<guid
